Attention Open Class Exhibitors

Quilt exhibitors (Division M) – please note that quilt entries are being taken on Monday, August 8, 2011 from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.  The quilts will be judged that evening.  For all other Divisions, entries will be taken on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Open Class Exhibits will be released on Sunday, August 14, 2011 at 5 p.m.

We are offering pre-registration of exhibits again this year.  Pre-registration allows us to prepare exhibit tags ahead of time and saves processing time for you and the Superintendents on entry day.  Pre-registration can be mailed or emailed.  An entry form is available in this premium book.  In order to get them processed on time, the cut-off date for pre-entries is August 1st.  After August 1st, just bring your items to the fair on entry day.  If you change your mind after pre-registration and do not intend to show an item, you may let us know and we will remove it from our records.

If you do not pre-enter, here are a few tips to help speed up the entry process for yourself and the superintendents.  1) For each Division that you enter, provide an address label that includes your name, address and phone number to attach to the entry form.  This will ensure correct spelling on your premium check and an address if we need to mail the check to you.  2) Provide a label with your name and hometown for the exhibit tag(s) that will be placed with your entry(ies).  3) Be prepared with the Class and Lot Numbers for each item that you are entering.  And with some divisions or classes, be sure to have the right age category.

What do judges look for as they select the ribbon winners?

Judges look for a combination of things.  They look for creativity, uniformity and quality.  How is the item made?  Is it sturdy and will it work for the purpose intended?  How long did it take to make the project?  Is it possible for small or simple projects to compete successfully with large or highly detailed works?  Yes – especially if one item is very neat, clean and creative versus something sloppy and poorly constructed.  Why is it that not all exhibits get a ribbon?  When you look at the classes notice how many ribbons are allowed for that class.  We only allow up to one blue, one red and one white to be awarded in each lot.  We give green ribbons to young exhibitors who participated with an exhibit.  There is no premium for the green ribbon.

The fair board is always looking for ideas, comments and input to improve the Goodhue County Fair.  Please let us know if you have suggestions.   Thank you for assisting us in streamlining the entry process.

Thank you!
